· Welcome and Introductions · Treasurer, Secretary, and State Board reports · Planning for 2017/Roundtable Discussion
1:15 PM: Nathaniel opened the Chapter Business portion of the meeting at the conclusion of Adobe’s presentation.
After quick introductions around the room, Nathaniel introduced the three chapter goals for 2017: 1) Innovation – to provide a forum to highlight new and unique approaches to finding solutions in municipal IT; 2) Holding chapter meetings in diverse locations – to provide greater opportunity for all chapter members to participate in at least a couple of meetings each year; and 3) Communication – meeting minutes and information will be sent out by the chapter president via formal email to all chapter members.
The motion to send out formal meeting minutes, vendor contact information and presentations was made by Nathaniel and seconded by Kim Murray. The motion passed unanimously.
Carolyn Saputo, Northern Chapter Treasurer stated that all bills have been paid and that thanks to the generosity of our vendor partners, that today’s event was completely paid for. The chapter has a balance of $34,949.81.
Nathaniel handed out printed copies of the meeting minutes and made a motion to accept them as presented. Marilyn Crane seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
Tim Williamsen, State Board Representative provided the following report:
Mariyah is back, welcome and glad to have her back at work in Cupertino and on the state board!!
MISAC now has almost 700 members! That represents 15% growth year over year. Wow, congratulations and thank you for all of the outreach!
Are there any training needs we can meet via MuniTech Academy? Let your chapter or state board representatives know!
Our annual conference this year will be back in Monterrey at the Hyatt. The dates are Sep 30 - Oct 4. This will be our last year at Hyatt as we are quickly growing and will need more space. Next year, our 2018 annual conference will be held in Palm Springs. In 2019, we will be back in Monterrey but at the new convention center.
The MISAC website has a new jobs posting site, features broad coverage, one of the best ways to find jobs in municipal IT. On the web site at http://jobs.misac.org!
Tim is this year’s conference chair. We need volunteers to help in many areas! Help with identifying this year’s themes, topics, speakers. Looking to form a conference committee to ensure it is another great success! The time commitment will be a few hours over email and telephone. Many hands make light work! The OJ and Sher do all the hard stuff – hotel, exhibits, vendors, catering, reservations, the app and so forth.
Board looking at proposals for 1) weekly newsletter, to fill in between quarterly meetings; 2) developing a speakers “bureau,” to involve retired members, and potentially develop a clearinghouse for information.
The state board is continuing to work with the League and CSDA to coordinate on legislation. Both the League and CSDA are showing a very high degree of renewed interest in tech and recognition of our role in agencies!
AB 241 – would require fraud protection if breach contains SSN or CDL. AB 1785 might exempt agency employees so they can use cell phones or radios without needing to be hands free.
Follow up to AB 2395 – The League of California Cities is trying to get out ahead of the issue and provide meaningful input as the bill has significant impacts on analog or Plain Old Telephone System (POTS) technologies.
Following Tim’s report from the State Board, we went around the room and each attendee provided an update on current projects. Nathaniel asked for the attendees to help develop topics for future meetings, and the following items were mentioned: 1) Use of 3D printing technology in local government; 2) Soft skill training such as project management, the art of negotiation and customer service; 3) Dealing with unstructured data – concerns, policy issues, management; 4) Vendor shootouts for various solutions; 5) Cyber security will continue to be of interest to most member agencies; 6) Discussion on managing the portfolio of projects we are faced with – starting up and staffing a PMO versus other approaches? 7) Discussion on developing a preferred vendor list
The meeting concluded at 2:45 PM.
October - 10/10/2016 Chapter Meeting - Annual Conference The meeting was convened at 8:00 AM in the Exhibit Hall
Tim Williamsen suggested setting up meeting dates, subjects ahead of time and the Chapter agreed this would be helpful to schedule out the meetings up to a year in advance.
Everyone in attendance took a couple of minutes to talk about their current initiatives:
Sudhanshu Tikekar (Santa Clara Valley Water Dist) - Ongoing work regarding IT strategy and policy. Marilyn Crane (Fremont) - agrees with Tim that we need to suggest dates and subjects ahead of time Jeff Gershaneck (Campbell) - also agrees that meeting dates and subjects should be scheduled ahead of time. A suggestion was made to invite Sunday's keynote speaker, Mark Goodman, to the Northern Chapter Guarav Garg (Santa Clara) - mentioned the strong value of the annual conference but mentioned his favorite aspect is seeing friends and getting caught up with the other conference attendees. Steve Rodriguez (Mountain View) - mad a suggestion about the MISAC listserv and looking for a more digestable, easily engaged method of communication. Roger Jensen (Mountain View) - made a suggestion to develop user or subject meetings at the next annual conference. Vice President Nathaniel Roush discussed the need to nominate Chapter officers for 2017. He also highlighted the fact that Jasmine Frost had accepted a position with the City of Long Beach, leaving the position of Northern Chapter President vacant. September - 9/16/16 Chapter Meeting and Amazon Fulfillment Center Tour Chapter members who were able to attend the Amazon Fulfillment Center Tour were treated to a very interesting event as we learned more about the technology behind the OAK 4 facility. While this installation is an eighth generation Amazon facility, four new ninth generation facilities are being built in 2016 nationwide. We were amazed at the 23 miles of conveyance, 25 million items in stock, the technology that kept nearly 700 Kiva Robotics in motion at any given time and many, many more interesting facts! We enjoyed lunch and a brief presentation from the Amazon Web Services team after the tour. For those members wishing to learn more about AWS, please contact Lisa Swanson, our State & Local Government representative:
